Smart Sustainable Districts – Utrecht Centre-West

Utrecht Centre-West will become an icon for sustainable and healthy urbanization. Less and slower traffic, climate and energy neutral construction, efficient water management and greening will soon provide for a pleasant place to stay and ample opportunities for new forms of working, living, shopping and nightlife.

The historic inner city and Utrecht Centre-West are two separated parts of Utrecht; these parts will be connected again to form one coherent centre. Furthermore, Utrecht is building a new Central Station area. This is needed because of overdue maintenance, a growing number of passengers, a growing city and the desire to get water back in the old canal. With the construction of a new and renewed area all these things are tackled at once.

With the transformation of the West-side of the Utrecht city center, the Municipality of Utrecht together with conference & exhibition center Jaarbeurs and other partners are taking a big step forward.

The main objectives of this ambition are:

  • an energy neutral area
  • a climate-proof area
  • an attractive area, through optimum greening, water retention and personal mobility

Smart Sustainable Districts
This project is part of Smart Sustainable Districts (SSD), a Climate-KIC Flagship programme. SSD works with some of the highest profile and aspirational district developments in Europe to boost resource efficiency, reduce energy consumption and address climate change challenges. The other districts in the network are: London, Berlin, Grande Paris, Gotheburg, Copenhagen and Rotterdam. There are regular meetings on different expert levels to exchange ideas and experiences.

The SSD-partners will specify the sustainable redevelopment ambitions of the Municipality of Utrecht and Jaarbeurs and provide them with decisive input for the decision making on the redevelopment in 2015-2016.

This program focusses on the following four co-development opportunities:

1.    Hybrid systems for heating and cooling at district level

2.    Local use of local renewable power, like smart solar EV-charging

3.    Green spots, cool spots, water retention, roof top farming

4.    Efficient & comfortable personal mobility

The SSD solutions are used for the Masterplan of the Jaarbeurs development (december 2015) and will be used for the structural vision of the municipality of Utrecht, early 2016.

What we need
Inspiring examples from other city developments are always welcome to fasten the journey towards the best sustainable solutions for this district. We are also willing to share our experiences, feel free to sign up for the newsletter to stay up-to-date.
