Tata Steel strives for 100% solid waste reuse

Tata Steel’s key solid waste is generated in our blast furnace (ovens). This mostly concerns ironmaking slag, which is a by-product from metal ore extraction and steelmaking. Our steelmaking (LD/SMS) slag utilisation is only 50-55%. Can you help us realize 90% of reusable SMS slag before 2023?

Optimising slag reuse

Established in Jamshedpur, India in the year 1907, Tata Steel is part of the 150-year-old Tata group. Tata Steel is an integrated steel plant with our own iron ore and coal mines. We have iron-making blast furnaces and steel-making Basic Oxygen Furnaces. Tata Steel India has two integrated steel plants: one in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand and one in Kalinganagar, Odisha. We are continuously using energy-saving technologies such as high productivity blast furnaces, waste heat recovery through top recovery turbines in blast furnaces, and Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) in coke ovens. We have continuously improved our energy efficiency and recently commissioned a 3 MW Solar plant at our Noamundi iron ore mines. Tata Steel Group is the 10th largest steel manufacturer in the world and is known to be the hallmark of corporate citizenship and business ethics. With operations in 26 countries and commercial presence in 50 countries, the Tata Steel Group has a steel production capacity of 27.5 MTPA (Metric Tons Per Year).

Our recycling challenges

The total solid waste reuse at Jamshedpur lies around 85% and around 87% at Kalinganagar, SMS slag has chemical properties where direct applications are difficult to find. The 50-55% of Tata Steel India SMS slag that is being reused outside of our production process, while the remaining ends up in landfills. Tata Steels’ attempt is to reach 100% SMS slag utilisation through research & development. Various initiatives that we are looking at are: improving weathering facilities, steam aging facilities, and building our own material recycling facilities. So that we can reach our goal of 90% slag reuse by 2023 (see the image at the bottom of this item to learn more about slag production).

Besides this challenge, we set out 2 more challenges. Not only do we strive for 100% reuse of our solid waste, but we are also working on reducing liquid waste & freshwater consumption, as well as CO2 emissions.

Towards a circular economy

We are looking for opportunities for leveraging Circular Economy to improve utilization of SMS slag. We are open to partnerships options within the industry or with other industries or academia/research organizations working on solid waste and/or slag reuse. We prefer partners located in India, but this is not a requirement. Tata Steel is ready to offer an open and start-up like environment to potential partners who can help us to come up with innovative solutions towards 100% slag reuse and therefore reducing our overall footprint.
