The Government of India has an ambitious goal for 2022: to generate 40GWh of solar electricity annually from thereon. This target is a part of India’s commitment before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The BRPL Solar City Initiative helps India reach this goal.
Making the shift to renewables
As a result, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (Government of India) has established tentative renewable energy targets for each state. Delhi is well positioned to implement solar rooftop interventions and has set target of 2 GWh by 2025[XZ(1] . The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has provided a foundation for effective compliance and rapid capacity addition in the state.
What is the BRPL Solar City Initiative?
BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) is the largest DISCOM (Distribution Company) in Delhi covering 750 sq. km of area with over 2.3 million customers. To contribute to India’s 2022 goal, we set up our Solar City Initiative.
The BRPL Solar City Initiative is a program for residential areas, starting in Dwarka, Delhi. The goal of the program is to create a shared platform where solar-panel buyers and rooftop solar-panel vendors/integrators can meet. The platform will accelerate solar-rooftop development by bringing together consumers and vendors while ensuring strict compliance of the systems being installed.
Currently, the program is targeting 200 single delivery point societies in Dwarka with a rooftop potential of 9.7 MW. To support adoption the initiative has also setup a 24x7 helpline and web portal for both consumers and vendors.
So far, the initiative has operationalized 271 KWh of rooftop solar power with an additional 320 KWh being brought on soon.
Integration with TUPIX: tool for smart city and urban planning:
Having implemented the country’s first consumer aggregation program for solar rooftop, BRPL looks forward to sharing its learning and experience with other Smart Cities and explore integration of other services and IoT platform to enhance consumer experience.
