These innovations that minimize CO2 emissions and bring local benefits to biodiversity. Cement can be produced in a more sustainable manner.

Two innovations in the cement industry: Saving 310,000 tons of CO2 emissions thanks to new developments

CSA-B cement is a good quality cement and produces 25% to 30% less CO2 emissions than the comparable Portland cement (CEM I). With the use of Geopolymers, the ower CO2 footprint is lowered by 70% to 80%. Conventional blast furnace cements have a CO2 footprint that can be up to 70% higher. An additional advantage: local biodiversity does not longer need to be disturbed, because these kinds of cement do not require marl excavation.
This innovative cement contributes to a CO2 reduction of 31% of the current total emissions in two ways:

  1. Geopolymer in non-structural concrete products

Geopolymer is a popular term for a very diverse group of concrete bond systems based on a wide range of raw materials. Calcium aluminates and silicates are the most important components. The binding capacity of geopolymers is alkaline-activated by adding activators such as caustic soda or sodium metasilicate (also known as water glass).

  1. CSA-B in housing

CSA-B cement is an innovative cement consisting of calcium sulfo-aluminate and beliet. The production processes of this material and the conventional Portland cement are similar. The expectation is that CSA-B combines a quick initial strength with a long lifespan (source: HeidelbergCement, 2013) and thus offers a good alternative to the more polluting Portland cement.

Innovative cement leads to 31% of the total possible CO2 reduction in 2020: 1 million less CO2.
