Plastic waste is an extremely valuable resource that power cable manufacturing companies have been accumulating over a period of time. It poses a great opportunity: We want to create a circular economy model where these plastics are used as a chemical feedstock for our products.

From linear to circular

We have collected a large amount of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) generated during the manufacturing of insulated cables. Right now, our waste goes into very low value creation such as conversion into other filling purposes. Manufacturers of electric cables are currently using round fillers/dummy elements made of PVC which comes in coil form (as shown in picture 4 and 5 below), typically used as filling or interstices material (picture 6 and 7). Would it be possible to recycle XLPE into a usable material for cable manufacturing? We have already other wastage like PVC, thermo plastic polyethene materials which are easy to recycle/reuse to other form. Where as XLPE is a thermoset polyethylene remains a challenge for us to recycle to another form.

What we are looking for?

We are looking for suitable technology, equipment or solution for recycling or reuse of XLPE for better value creation. Ideally, so that it could be used to produce interstices or other forms of input material that we can incorporate into our production process. We only recycle a few percent of the plastic worldwide, yet virgin plastic production consumes around 10% of all oil consumption. We want to explore the opportunities of using XLPE plastic waste/scrap as a raw material for cable manufacturing. This way, we will be another step closer to the circular economy.
