ISC₃ Innovation Challenge in Sustainable Building and Living
event

25 July 2019 - 22 June 2020

The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC₃) launches the Innovation Challenge to engage, honour and promote Sustainable Chemistry Changemakers from all around the world. The Challenge will provide its winners with global visibility as well as monetary and in-kind start-up support.

SCOPE

The first ISC₃ Innovation Challenge focuses on Sustainable Building and Living and addresses innovators developing solutions in the following thematic areas:

1. Design of construction elements and materials facilitating reuse and recycling. Chemistry-based solutions for modular construction elements or construction materials facilitating dismantling, separation, sorting and recyclability at the end of life.
2. Indoor air quality and/or thermal regulation. Chemistry-based solutions to improve issues relating to indoor air quality and/or thermal regulation;
3. Low cost/tech solutions for affordable housing. Chemistry innovations supporting affordable housing for construction, buildings and living with a focus on challenges in developing and emerging economies;
4. Performance materials and technologies (I). Chemical innovations substantially contributing to longevity and durability of the building/construction and interior, or providing benefits in resource or energy efficiency over the entire lifecycle;
5. Performance materials and technologies (II). Innovative construction chemicals and materials with superior properties regarding performance in the application, use of nontoxic compounds, safe handling and processing, and enabling of end of life treatment;
6. Resilience Engineering. Developing green chemicals and materials with a positive impact on resilience of buildings, especially with respect to emerging climate-related threats.
7. Renewables and Recycling. Design, production and use of renewable materials, re-used construction waste or other recycled materials for new construction products.
8. Substitution of hazardous compounds. Substitution of hazardous compounds and/or substitution of compounds with PBT-properties in construction materials and formulations, in insulation materials or hazardous VOCs in paints, coatings, carpeting and flooring.

CRITERIA

The proposals will be assessed against the three main criteria:

Innovation level. Is the innovation unique, distinct and truly original?
Business viability. What is the market potential of the innovation? Is the idea commercially feasible?
Sustainability. What is the sustainability impact of the innovation?

WHAT TO EXPECT

Submitted applications will be reviewed by the ISC₃ team. Authors of the most promising innovations will then be invited to provide more details about their idea in an extended application form. The international jury panel will review the extended applications and select five Innovation Challenge finalists.
The finalists will receive:

Tailored support: access to Customised Support within the ISC₃ Global Start-up Service
Cash prize: the winner receives cash prize of 25,000EUR
Visibility: promotion of your innovation via ISC₃ communication channels
Networking: participation in the Global Sustainable Chemistry Week 2020 with >1000 decision-makers from industry, science and politics
Training: pitch training in preparation to your Pitching Session at the Global Sustainable Chemistry Week

ELIGIBILITY

The ISC₃ Innovation Challenge is open for all ideators and entrepreneurs employed by organisations including research institutes, start-ups, small-medium sized enterprises or comparable institutions active in the development and realisation of sustainable chemistry innovations.
Please keep in mind that we accept only one application per team.
