Ethiopia may not immediately spring to mind as a suitable sourcing destination for leather products, but it is. Davimpex tannery in Bahir Dar produces high quality leathers and ready-made products such as gloves, garments and bags for the global export market.
Bahirdar tannery is eager to work with European buyers on developing and producing high quality products. It is specialised in gloves (fashionable and sports gloves) made from the celebrated Ethiopian 'hair sheep'-leather. Hair sheep is an endemic breed that delivers one of the finest types of leather in the world. Other products include garments, bags, belts and shoe uppers.
It is the company's goal to develop and manufacture the finest leather products that meet buyer's expectations in quality, delivery time and other key standards. Davimpex Bahirdar Tannery is always eager to learn and adopt new technology and process innovations.
The tannery has the capacity to produce 108,000 pairs of gloves, 9,000 pieces of leather garment and 14,400 bags per year. It considers dedication to product quality, customer care, accountability, team spirit and ethical working conditions as part of its core values.
Bahirdar tannery works with an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and is working towards compliance with the LWG, using the LWG's Tannery of the Future self-assessment for sustainable leather production. Furthermore, Bahirdar tannery is a part of 'Ethiopian Highland Leather', a training and mentoring programme by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The tannery is located in Bahirdar Town, the capital of the Amhara regional State, which is about 600 kilometers north-west of Addis Ababa. The company provides work opportunity for 216 workers, of which 132 are permanent workers and 84 are temporary.
